Museums tell the area’s history from the earliest Native American residents, through fur traders to miners (mostly coal), homesteaders.
Ouray and Ridgway — gateway to the San Juans.
Scenic Ouray, surrounded by peaks topping 14,000 feet, is known as the Switzerland of America. Founded when gold and silver was discovered, it was colonized by early miners and their families, quickly becoming a cultural center. Many or the original buildings remain. Ridgway was originally a railroad town, a central point for supplies going to and from the mines and the nearby ranching communities. Today it is known for its art and live entertainment and great restaurants.
